How To Post Fanart on Archive of Our Own

How to post an image to Archive of Our Own in 5 easy steps

AO3 - the Annal of Our Own - has never been the nearly obvious platform for hosting artwork or other media. There is no simple upload method, and no separate fanart category. I actually honey browsing through the fine art tags on the site though, and then I figured I would put together this little tutorial post for anybody googling for a solution.

Step One

Create your artwork and save it equally a digital file. .jpg, .png, or .gif are the easiest formats.

(If you're looking to create fake social media posts / texts, etc, check out Simitator.)

Stride 2

Upload your artwork to the net. Y'all can't shop your artwork on AO3, yous have to upload information technology elsewhere first. This could be somewhere like DeviantArt or Tumblr, or a defended hosting service.

My favourite is imgur.com as it'south reliable and has no storage limits. (Notation: if your image is sexually explicit information technology may fall foul of Imgur'south Terms of Service, merely in general they merely take down if something is reported to them.)

Pace 3

Get the URL of your image. If you used an prototype hosting website, you can just copy and paste from the relevant box. You lot want to use the direct link, AKA the URL with the file format designation at the end.

Direct Link option on Imgur

If you uploaded to somewhere similar DeviantArt just right click on your epitome. It will result in a popular up with a short list of options - choose 'copy prototype address'. Alternatively, yous might want to be able to actually run into the address. In that case, cull 'open image in new tab'. Become to that tab and you will be able to copy the URL from the address bar at the top of the folio.

How to get your image URL

STEP Four

Go set up to postal service your new piece of work to Archive of Our Own. In the Rich Text editor at that place is an easy choice to help you postal service your image. (If you desire to employ HTML instead please skip ahead to Step 5.) Click on the little picture on the tool bar and it will bring up a box asking for a few details.

Uploading an image to Archive of Our Own

The 'source' box is where you lot paste the URL from Step 3. The 'image description' box is what will brandish if the prototype itself doesn't, or if somebody is using a screen reader to view the page. The 'dimensions' are how big the epitome is going to be. This will input automatically when you put the URL in the source box.

The problem with designating size in pixels is that it will non be responsive in mobile view. (i.e. it will stretch the page out, or mean people have to scroll to encounter the whole thing.) It'due south improve to use % for dimensions - just fill out the left paw box (width) and leave the right one empty. 100% will mean the epitome always takes up the full width of the page, regardless of how big the page is.

Step FIVE

(If you followed Step Four and are happy with how your paradigm looks, feel free to skip this step! If it however needs tinkering, read on...)

Switch to HTML view and use the following template to brandish your image. (Yous tin can copy and paste it from the box.) For 'width', choose the percentage width of the page you want your paradigm to encompass.

<img alt="description of your paradigm hither" src="URL of your paradigm here" width="100%" />

Other things you lot're likely to want to practise is marshal your prototype (left, right, or eye) -

<middle><img alt="description of your image hither" src="URL of your image here" width="100%" /></center>

Or make information technology and so that text continues to catamenia effectually the paradigm. You exercise this by adding in a 'style' aspect. In this example I've aligned the image to the left, but you lot tin can hands change information technology to the right by switching out 'left' for 'correct'. I've included a border of blank space because otherwise the text butts correct up against the image and looks messy - you tin experiment with how big you lot want the margin by altering the number of pixels.

<img alt="description of your prototype here" src="URL of your epitome here" mode="float: left; margin: 10px 10px" width="100%" />
